Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic external therapy in which a controlled stream of a selected liquid is directed over the forehead in a quiet treatment setting. Takradhara is a related practice that traditionally uses a prepared buttermilk-based liquid in selected circumstances.
People often describe the setting and rhythmic flow as relaxing, but the choice of liquid, temperature, duration, and surrounding care should be individualised. These therapies are not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of anxiety, insomnia, headache, or a neurological condition.
A practitioner should first review the person’s health history, present symptoms, skin and scalp condition, medicines, and any reason the therapy may be unsuitable. Comfort, modesty, temperature control, hygiene, and supervision matter throughout.
Persistent anxiety, severe sleep disturbance, sudden headache, mood crisis, or neurological symptoms require appropriate medical or mental-health care.
